Anderson’s Little Mermaid, Copenhagen

Riga, Latvia

Tallinn, Estonia

Copenhagen, Denmark, is a city with historical charm and a contemporary style that feels effortless. It is an old merchants’ town overlooking the entrance to the Baltic Sea with so many architectural treasures that it’s known as the “City of Beautiful Spires.” Copenhagen can be enjoyed on foot or on a bicycle. Embark Azamara Pursuit. Sails at 5:00 PM.

Gdansk, Poland, an old port city on the Gulf of Danzig about 180 mi/290 km northwest of Warsaw, was established in the 10th century and is one of Poland’s loveliest cities. See the ornate row houses in the Old City (Stare Miasto) and visit the port with its landmark, the medieval port crane (called Zuraw) over the Motlawa river. Don’t miss the beautifully restored 14th-century Town Hall (the interior is overwhelmingly ornate), which contains the Gdansk History Museum; the magnificent houses along the Royal Way; the city’s gates; the prison tower (and its torture museum); and the huge St. Mary’s Church (the largest brick church in Poland). The National Museum hosts the fascinating (and terrifying) triptych Last Judgement, painted around 1470 and attributed to Hans Memling.  Ship arrives: 1:00 PM. Overnights.

Continue exploring this Polish city birthplace of Gabriel Fahrenheit (of thermometer fame), philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, writer Gunter Grass, the Solidarity trade union (a monument to the organization can be found at the shipyards) and its leader, Lech Walesa. Another monument stands at Westerplatte, the promontory at the mouth of the harbor, to mark the spot where 182 Polish soldiers held out for a week against Nazi dive-bombers, troops and a battleship during the opening battle of World War II. Ship departs 8:00 PM.

The port of Klaipeda, a fishing and manufacturing center 175 mi/280 km northwest of Vilnius, is Lithuania’s oldest city, dating from the seventh century. Sights include the Picture Gallery’s sculpture collection, the History Museum of Lithuania Minor, and the Protestant Church of St. George (on Market Square). Shoppers should visit Mantas Street, where the city’s most fashionable boutiques are located, and have a meal on board the historic three-master Meridianas, which is moored at the Dankai close to the bridge leading to the city center. Ship arrives 7:30 AM; departs 2:00 PM.

Riga, Latvia’s capital and main port, is a beautiful city of nearly 700,000 people with an almost German ambience and the bustle of a true metropolis. The oldest buildings are influenced by German and Swedish architectural styles, and Soviet-epoch concrete buildings dot the cityscape. Ship arrives 8:00 AM; departs 10:00 PM.

Explore your ship: enjoy dinner at a specialty restaurant, drinks in the bar, entertainment on board or relax with a spa treatment.

As the former official—some still say cultural—capital, St. Petersburg is the most westernized of Russia’s cities. Its grand architecture echoes the great cities of Europe, and there are seemingly endless museums full of staggering quantities of treasure. The names of its places and people are a roll call of Russian history of the 19th and 20th centuries: the Winter Palace, the czars, Dostoyevsky, the Catherine Palace, Tchaikovsky, Lenin. Ship arrives 8:00 AM. Overnights.

Continue to explore this amazing city. St. Petersburg sprawls along the banks of the Neva River and was once known as the Venice of the North for the many canals there. Ship overnights.

This is your last day in this city. Be sure to visit all the places on your bucket list of things to see and do. Ship departs 6:00 PM.

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is considered one of the best-preserved medieval cities in northern Europe. Its charming Old Town survived the Soviets, as well as the country’s earlier occupations by the Danish and Swedish empires (among others). Ship arrives 8:00 AM; departs 4:00 PM.

Stockholm, Sweden, is a city of contrasts. Unspoiled architecture dating back centuries is complemented by the best in modern Scandinavian design. Stockholm’s appreciation of its culture and heritage shows in its theaters, concert halls and galleries, which showcase a rich variety of artistic innovations. The waterways surrounding Stockholm’s islands clearly define the city’s various quarters. From the bohemian cliff-top cafes of Sodermalm and the 17th-century cobbled streets of Gamla Stan to the luxury boutiques of Ostermalm and the parkland calm of Djurgarden, you’re never more than a bridge away from a completely different city experience. Ship arrives 7:00 AM. Disembark.
